Water Hazards
I recently put together a working party amongst the Competitions and Fixtures Committee to look at and adjust the markings of the Water Hazards and Lateral Water Hazards and they have been out on the course in the last few days to make the necessary adjustments. Inevitably, over the last year or so, hazard posts have fallen, been moved by players and/or become overgrown as the Greenkeepers have extended the areas set aside for the development of natural plants and wildlife.
Hopefully, the definitions of the hazards are now very clear, but I would draw your attention to two matters in particular.
1st hole: in the past, to the left hand side of the green there have been two separate water hazards and a "no man's land" in between. For the avoidance of doubt, the whole of the left hand side near the green is now a Lateral Water Hazard as if there was a Red line drawn between the Red stakes on the whole of the left hand side.
17th hole: Similar now applies on the left of the 17th hole in that any ball beyond the Red stakes on the left hand side (from the tee all the way down to and including, the new pond) is in a Lateral Water Hazard and relief may be taken accordingly.
As a reminder to those of you who are not Rules officials or Rules aware, a ball is in a water hazard if (a) it is "known" to be in a hazard (i.e. you find it in the hazard) or (b) it is "virtually certain" to be in the hazard (i.e. it couldn't possibly in reality be lost anywhere else but in the hazard). These changes remove possible ambiguity on the 1st and 17th holes.
If a Red or Yellow stake interferes with your stroke or intended area of swing, under the Rules, you are entitled to remove it…if you do please ensure you replace it exactly where it was. (remember, you are not entitled under the Rules of Golf to move a White post indicating Out Of Bounds).
