Ladies section

An event happened on Tuesday that should make you all proud to be part of Brampton Park ladies section. Having reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Grace Norman County competition all of our team arrived primed and ready to go for an early tee time of 9am at Newmarket. The only thing among us that were weak was the coffee and our knees! However, nerves is a positive in any competition, tasteless coffee is not!

First out against our opponents Royston was Fay Allison and Cath Emery who had to give their ladies 4 shots. No problem to the duelling duo as they won their match 5 and 3 and I witnessed some great golf from both. Fay's driver was like a sword as she wielded it magnificently and then placed it triumphantly back into its sheath (golf bag!).

Cath was like the sorcerer's apprentice who is growing in stature with each game she plays and boy she plays it well! A fantastic result.

Shirley Osborne and Sally Palmer had a tough match having to give their ladies 6 shots. At high noon their opponents were taking advantage of a dusty and hardened fairway where the tumbleweed almost rolled into town. With true grit they fought hard but sadly lost on the 16th. A valiant effort though against a couple of seasoned ladies.

So this left the match all square with 1 win and 1 loss. Then came the power packs at the race track, Roz Irons and Lynda Hall. Giving 7 shots this would be a big test in this most difficult of formats. In a very hard fought match they were 2 down with 2 to play. Undaunted, the girls won the 17th and 18th holes with some great drives and even better putting. This resulted in having to go down the 1st again till there was a winner.

All of our team watched in anticipation as each ball was struck down the 1st and fortunately Margaret Gates was well equipped with binoculars so she could inform us how it was going.... Halved on the 1st so onto the second and out of sight to the watching crowd. We waited and waited and finally the Brampton girls were on their way back..... Arms aloft..... We had won on the second (extra) hole and through to the finals where Saffron Walden were waiting.

First up was the deadly duo of Fay and Cath and if their semi-final round win was just a taster of what they could do, their match in the final was starter, main course, desert and cheese and biscuits! With a fantastic 8 and 6 victory. Second out was Kay Osborne and Ann Norman (a fresh pair of legs for the afternoon). A hard fought contest against 2 very strong opponents where it was nip and putt all the way! Unfortunately, after a valiant and very well contested match, Kay and Ann had to concede to defeat on the 17th.

Finally it was Lynda and Roz. Again, a hard fought contest where the match could have gone either way. Regrettably, the bunker bunnies were on the oppositions side and while I witnessed many twists and turns, it was Saffron Waldens turn to be victorious. It really was so close for the last pairings but it was not meant to be.

I hope you will join me in congratulating all of our team who were magnanimous in defeat and like I said to them, the county will certainly know that Brampton Park ladies will never give up and are a force to be reckoned with in the future. A fantastic effort and we have come a long way and should be very proud that this year we have reached two county knockout semi-finals. While dear old Grace (Norman) has seen us as valiant runners up, we still have the Jean Wilkinson to show 'em what we've got!

I am so proud of our team: Fay, Cath, Lynda, Roz, Sally, Shirley, Kay, Ann and Mo who have all contributed throughout the knock out rounds to get us well and truly on the County map. Long 'May' it continue! Thank you also to Margaret Gates who without her binoculars we would not have realised what was unfolding in the matches. She also supported me along the way watching all the matches along the way. Thanks Mags.

A great day for Brampton Park Ladies.

It was a fantastic result for Jimmy Walker winning his first major, and what a performance, leading from the first round until the last! The top British performer for the second major in a row was Tyrell Hatton, a great prospect for years to come and maybe a Ryder Cup spot this year.
