Ladies Captain's Day

Saturday 13th August saw the course invaded by many ladies, celebrating Mays' Lady Captains day. The theme was Cluedo and there were some great guises. There were Colonel Mustards who ''mustard' up some memorable outfits.

Mrs Peacock was so well represented that I thought I was at a bird sanctuary. Two cooks (Mrs White).... Whisked off into the sunset and were ready to batter the opposition into submission.

Then we had the Miss Scarlett's. Feather boas, red dresses, red trews, all in 'red'inness for the day ahead.

Blessed with the presence of a couple of Reverend Greens. .....the Professor Plumbs were hoping their round would be 'fruit'ful.

Sally Palmer came as everything..... Characters, weapons, rooms, dice, board the list goes on.

Her costume weighed more than she did but valiantly carried with great aplomb.

Then Cath Emery, not to be outdone, came as a spanner. From head to toe she looked the part and all created in her own indomitable style. In all, there were sights never seen before and certainly ensured a colourful day.

My chariot for the day appeared from behind the fence and glided majestically over the putting green (only joking Nick!). What a sight, a four poster bed adorned with curtains, frills, lamps, duvet, pillows, 'No vacancies' sign and an array of teddies.

I could not believe the effort that was put in and Roz, my chauffeur, ensured the whole of the golf course was covered. What fun we had, calling in for a wee glass of Pimms at the 9th (oh and calling in again... and again). Superbly served by Ray Miller, John Cardwell, Keith Williams, Brian Strand and Graham Blewitt. Linda Christian was chief cake co-ordinator so all entrants were well fed and watered and I believe the chaps enjoyed them also!!

In the evening a superb meal was served where Kevin showcased his abilities and was ably assisted by Martin. The ladies gave well deserved praise. Finally, prizes were given out to the worthy winners and there were some great scores on the day. In all, as Boris Johnson once said, 'If you are not willing to look stupid, nothing great is going to happen to you'! Our ladies were certainly not stupid but stupendous! A fantastic day.

World of sport

Rose Wins Gold

Great Britain's Justin Rose claimed golf's first Olympic gold medal in 112 years, after edging out Open champion Henrik Stenson in a thrilling final-round battle in Rio. Rose carded a closing 67 at Reserva de Marapendi to finish 16 under par and two shots ahead of Ryder Cup partner Stenson, with American Matt Kuchar claiming bronze after a superb 63.

The outcome was only decided on the 72nd hole when Rose pitched to three feet to set up a decisive birdie and Stenson missed his attempt from long range. That left the stage clear for Rose to tap-in and seal victory before punching the air in delight.
