Masters 2016
The annual Masters golf match and presentation was held this year on Saturday 1 October. For those maybe less aware, it is run at the year-end for winners of Board Competitions and Summer Medals and is followed by a dinner and presentation of trophies.
There was a full field of players with nearly everyone qualified signing up. The course was great, unfortunately the weather wasn't so kind on the day and just about everyone caught a shower of varying intensity at some point. Nevertheless the scoring was remarkably strong with the eventual winner, Mark King (on his birthday!) Posting a fantastic net 65 and retaining his Masters title from last year.
After the golf we returned to the clubhouse for the meal and trophy presentations. The food and service were again excellent, many thanks to our staff for their efforts. The Captain realised that there was a bit of an issue what with the Ryder Cup also being on TV so made a valiant effort to beat last year's record by Chris Cuthbert of 40 minutes for awarding the trophies. The Lady Captain was pressed into a fast jog to keep on top of issuing them (sorry May) and it was a close run thing, missing by only a minute! It was a good day's golf followed by a good night out, I can't wait for next year and watching the incoming Captains sweat to beat the record!

25th Anniversary Tri Match, BPGC-BOURN-SCAGC
At the beginning of the year one of our Past Captains, David Creek was appointed Captain of the Society of Cambridgeshire Golf Captains, (SCAGC), whose membership is constituted from all the past Captains of Cambridgeshire golf clubs. There's a lot of Captains in that sentence but I'm sure you get my drift! Notwithstanding the large number of matches they play with similar County Societies he had the idea to celebrate both our 25th Anniversary and that of Bourn Golf Club, also 25 years old, by holding a tri-team match at each club.
The first match was played at Bourn on 20 September, 12 to each side with best 10 Stableford scores to count. It was a fine day, the course was playing well but home field advantage gave Bourn a 14 point lead over Brampton Park with SCAGC close(ish) behind. We then had a superb meal supplied by Bourn at which point their owner stated that he was donating a trophy for men's matches to be played for each year and this was to be the start of the series. Naturally this was a challenge that we took to heart, after all it was only a 14 point deficit and surely we could make that up?
Well, the second match was played at Brampton Park on 27th September, only a week later. Once again the weather was kind to us, the course was in superb condition and we felt confident. Only 15 extra points needed over Bourn, with home field advantage, odds on for us. I have to say that we matched the hospitality of Bourn by having a fantastic meal and service from our staff, and the result was called at the end - Brampton Park were overall winners by ONE POINT! That close over 20 scoring matches shows how hard it was contested. But read it again, we are the champions!
It was a great time had by all and I look forward to us retaining the trophy in next year's Men's match and for a few years to come. Thanks go to David and SCAGC for getting the event up and running and to Phil Crow of Bourn for providing what will surely be a hotly contested trophy every year.
