Well Done Mike!

The annual England vs France Disabled Handicup was played over the 12th and 13th of May at Dunkerque golf club.

Both teams entered their strongest 6 players from the national pool for Foresomes and Greensomes on Saturday then Singles on Sunday. With 12 points up for grabs 6.5 points would win the title for either team.

Following a very productive practice day on Friday, coaching from Craig Thomas PGA Professional and letters written to the team by Sir Clive Woodward the team were ready to hit the ground running.

Mike Gays and team captain Mark Smith got off to a hot start in the greensomes, racing to 4 up through 4 holes and eventually closing the match out 5&4. Duncan Hamilton-Martin and George Groves scrapped their way to a half, while Tom Beard and Kevin Harmison couldn't quite knock out the French tail enders losing 2&1.

Preparation paid off big dividends in the afternoon, as it was a whitewash to the English. Mark and Tom cruised to a 6&4 win, Duncan and George won 5&4 and Mike and Kevin wrapped it up with a 5&3 victory. England went into the singles with a 4.5-1.5 lead, requiring 2 points on the day to win the cup.

A very promising start as Mark and Mike took 1 and 2 hole advantages to the 10th tee, Mike made 4 birdies on the front nine, but couldn't make huge gains against a very capable 4 handicap golfer. Mark won his match on 18, whereas Mike was steamrolled by his opponents 4 birdies and fell to a 2&1 defeat. Their betterball score would have been -6 through 17 holes gross! Tom made a great half up 18 and George ran out as comfortable victor in match #4 to win on the 15th green and seal the match for the English!

The final score was 4.5-7.5 to England, who look forward to facing the French team next year greatly!

Mike is next off to Portugal at the end of June to play in the European Team Championships with Mark, Duncan and Kevin. Europe's best disabled golfers will be there and it will be another chance to win some silverware for the English Disabled Golf Team.
