Senior Men's' Open
The Senior Men's Open took place on Monday 3 Jul 17, with 91 players participating. Played in good weather, the guests came from far and wide, no doubt attracted by challenging course and an entry fee of only £25. We had visitors from Millbrook, Spalding, Thetford and Aldenham to name but a few; in fact one club, Sudbrook Moor, bought along 14 players, such is the popularity of the event.
We all know that the course is looking fairly thirsty at the moment, but Nick Meehan and his staff did an excellent job in preparing the course and many visitors spoke of the high quality of the greens.
Played off the yellows with full handicap, there were many prizes on offer. It was decided to have parallel competitions for BPGC members and visitors. Thus, there were separate respective longest drive, nearest the pin and best stableford score competitions. This worked well and the restaurant remained full for the prize ceremony. Our thanks must also go out to Charlotte and the catering team, who provided an excellent running buffet.
For the record, Martin Shirley won the best BPGC stableford competition with 43 points - 6 points ahead of his nearest rival John Maith. For the visitors Bruce Kitchener from The Millbrook Golf Club won with 39 points, beating 3 others all of whom scored 38. I witnessed the longest drive of the day on the 8th hole - 294 yards with a 3 wood by Phil Nutley, also from The Millbrook, Nigel Mersh taking the honours for BPGC seniors with 275 yard. Of course, many players said that they drove the ball longer, but direction just let them down. A fisherman's tale of course!
We had positive feedback on the day from many participants and others have e-mailed the team thanking us for our efforts and many if not all said "I'll be back".
