Welcome to this week's pro shop newsletter with news of a great win by Brampton Park to claim the Burridge Cup with a full match report below.

Club news

Brampton Men Win Burridge Cup!

CAGU have introduced new competitions into this year’s calendar which are aimed at players of 6 handicap and above, including the Derek Burridge Knockout Cup. The trophy has been played for many years but was specifically aimed at the smaller clubs within Cambridgeshire area, but this year it has seen the inclusion all 21 CAGU affiliated clubs.

Throughout this year’s competition Brampton has been drawn against Lakeside lodge, Cambridge Meridian and Elton Furze on our way to the final to meet Old Nene. The final was always going to be a tough encounter especially as our opponents won tough away matches against Newmarket and Gog Magog along the way.

The final took place on Saturday at Cambridge Meridian on Saturday 29th July with the following pairings representing Brampton Park:

Match1 – Michael McFadyzean & Jonathan Sharples
Match2 – John Topping & Dennis Lea
Match3 – Steve Tomkins & Lee King
Match4 – Greg Wills & Peter North
Match5 – Adam Longford & Jim Law

All matches were very close throughout and at one point I had the feeling we were heading into extra holes.

A strong fightback, however, by John and Dennis for me was the pivotal moment of the day which saw them reverse their match from 2 down through 14 holes to an impressive 2 up, which was enough for Brampton to clinch a victory of 3-2.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who represented our club on the day. I thought we presented ourselves very professionally and are all an asset to our club. A special mention should go to Mrs North who made the trip to Meridian last minute to ensure Peter was dressed appropriately for the big match!

Competition news

Men’s Midweek Medal - 26/7/17

Congratulations to John Davy on winning with a nett score of 66 on countback from Mike Gays with a gross 71 (nett 66) in second place. In third place was Bob Kamper with a nett 70. On the day, there were 5 twos; well done to David Fisher, Steve Tomkins, Nick Miller, Mike Gays and Mike Normanton who all received £11.60 on the Pro Shop account. Well done to everyone who played and best of luck for next time.

 

July Monthly Medal - 29/7/17

Well done to Malcolm Bainbridge who won division 1 with the nett 67. The winner of division 2 was Nick Miller with a nett 69 and winning division 3 with a nett 74 was Rod Youngman. There were 9 twos in the competition made by Tom Strand, John Davy, JDW Davies, Tyrone Allan, Graham Gibb, Peter Caller, Richard Scott, Nick Miller and Dave Ives. Each player received £4.22 per two credited to their Pro Shop account.

 

President’s Putter - 30/7/17

Congratulations to Simon Rose who won the bogey competition with a score of +4, coming second on countback, also with +4, was Peter North. Finishing in third place with +3 was Iain Munro and on +2 and in fourth place on countback was Richard Goodwin. There were 9 twos made by Dave King, Scott Hamilton, Richard Kennedy, Colin Williams, Alan Murray, Richard Scott, Nick Miller, Nick Page and Dave Cotton. Each player has been credited with £9.44 to their Pro Shop account.

THE BENEFITS OF COUNTERBALANCING

With counterbalanced putters the key change is heavier heads, which help fight twisting to make your stroke more accurate. This head weight alone would ruin feel, so another difference is extra mass above your hands in the butt of the grip, which balances the feel of the putter.

This Titleist Scotty Cameron Futura Dual Balance putter is a great example. It utilises longer shafts from 36” to 40” to get the 50g weight in the butt of the grip above your hands, while 50g head weights further stabilise your stroke.
