Greetings from Alisdair Currie

Ladies Club Championship

The ladies completed their morning round returning some excellent scores. The afternoon round was interrupted when a thunderstorm and a deluge of rain swamped everyone and most of the greens. After marking their ball the ladies retreated to the clubhouse. Nick Meehan did a great job sweeping the water off the flooded greens and the rain cleared. Fortunately the ladies were able to resume their round although finishing just after 7pm.

The winner of the Ladies Club Championship, Roz Irons returned an amazing score of 161 ( 77, 84). Runner up was Amanda Rawson on 163 (80,83) and in third place was Mo Poole with 166 (77,89).

The winner of the Davies Shield, Ann Norman, won on count back from Trina Miller, with the best Net Score of 146 over 2 rounds.

The Bronze Ball was won by Katie Dixon for the lowest bronze gross score with a total of 199.

In the Sapphire Trophy the winner on 38 points was Julie Miller, runner-up was Di Nicholson with a close 37points and in third place was Teresa Neeson on 32 points.

The Presentation took place in the evening with dinner which was enjoyed by all the ladies.

Thank you
Katie.

Lady Captain's Away Day(s)

Well it was with trepidation that I sat at Thorpeness waiting for 33 wittering women to descend on us. It was the 2nd of June and a lovely day to boot. Here we were to enjoy a couple of days golfing with our Lady Captain. All she had to do was sit back and enjoy it. They turned up in dribs and drabs looking forward to what was to come.

We started off with brunch. Well you have to fuel yourselves up. This is just the preparation for the days ahead. Our first tee-time was mid-day and so there we were all converged on the first tee raring to go. The sun was out spirits were high and we were ready. I handed out balls that Alisdair had kindly provided to us. How many of us would still have these by the end of the round?

The first 4 tee'd off. This was the single stableford with some nearest the pins thrown in. There were 32 of us playing with 2 helpers who unfortunately couldn't play but I am pleased to say, wanted to still come and join in. So thank you to Debbie Dale and Hilary Rogers for coming along and joining in. I hope you are both on course for a speedy recovery.

As we went from hole to hole, those of us that had been here before began to remember the course and started to feel quite comfortable.

The 7th hole was the first nearest the pin hole. Wow, what an expanse of water you needed to get over to get to the pin. I lost 2 balls in the water and gave up on that hole. Better luck tomorrow I hoped. The end result for that hole was Shirley Osborne was the closest. The other nearest the pin was on the 16th. Which really should have had a list of names on there however it had only one. And that was Brenda Davey. Well done to both these ladies obviously not as simple as we all thought.

We were all finished by 17:30 and congregated in the bar (where else) to pick our meal choice for the evening and swap stories with the others on our games. The meal was arranged for 20:00 so we agreed to meet in one of the rooms at 19:00 for pre-dinner drinks, So at 19:00 into a room of babbling babes I went. As the room filled up and drinks were passed round the noise grew to a crescendo and when it was time to announce dinner I couldn't be heard above the din.

Eventually the word got around and we traipsed along to the dining room. There were already some guests seated but we soon saw them off! Nothing can put you off your dinner more than 34 chattering chicks talking over one another in an effort to prove their game was better/worse than their counterparts. The meal came and was delicious. We had 3 courses and coffee and it was over in the blink of an eye.

On to the prize giving. Fortunately it was only us in the room so we could make as much noise as we wanted. (Which we had been doing anyway).

A couple of fun "prizes" were handed out. One to Karen Lindley having lost her ball on one of the holes only for a following group to lose theirs but find Karen's. Bit of a result there. The other one to June Cowper. During June's round there wasn't a gorse bush that June's ball didn't go into. So with that in mind we thought it only fair to present her with a little bit of the course.

Finally on to the real results.

We had 4 victors.

4th with 39 points was Julie Peacock (this was on count back)
3rd with 39 points was Sally Palmer
2nd with 41 points was Kay Osborne
1st with 43 points was Ann Norman

Well done to everyone for that first days play. We then retired to the bar for further contemplation of our games. Next day we were all up bright and early. Ok well maybe a bit of an exaggeration. Not sure about the bright bit for sure, and to be honest is 9am really early?

Anyway we breakfasted like Kings/Queens and were ready to go again. Today's game was a curve ball. It was called 40 balls and was played in a team of 4. Each player had to play only 10 balls but someone had to play on every hole. So you couldn't opt out on Stroke Index 1 for example.

Wow not only did we have to play golf but we had to be mathematicians as well. This was a test of not only golf but cunning. When should you use the scores and when to leave what you think is a good score out.

As the teams walked off at the end I was passing out Ibuprofen for the headaches of those who had had to keep score. It appeared however that everyone had grasped the concept and apparently seemingly enjoyed it. Look out for this game coming to a course near you!

A quick tot up showed that the overall winners were Fay Allison, Karen Lindley, Shirley Osborne and Sally Palmer.

Well done to everyone who won and those of us that just lagged along and held the teams up. Speaking for myself I had a really enjoyable time and hope everyone else did too.

Looking forward to next year already.

Lady Vice Captain

Over the last 3 weeks the Junior team have been busy with 2 away matches and 1 at home

Sunday 8th June

League match at home to Gogs.

After a slow start the team finally dominated Gogs finishing the match 9 points to 3. Special mentions must go to Nick Miller who came back from 4 down with 4 to play to halve his match and to Jared Sharp who from what looked like an impossible position at 2 down with 3 to play then won the last 3 holes to win the match 1 up.

Sunday 15th June

St.Ives Cup ( Foursomes match play ) away to Saffron Walden.

This was always going to be a tough ask playing away knowing the home team would be strong. After a reasonable start the team faltered and ended the day losing our first match of the season. The team lost 2 games to 1. Jared Sharp and Adam Steel in his first game for the team managed a creditable point winning their match.

Sunday 22nd June

League match away to Gogs.

We expected that after the drubbing we handed out to Gogs earlier in the month that they would be keen to get their revenge. They didn't disappoint. By way of a change they put us out on the Wandlebury course, none of our team had ever seen yet alone played the Wandlebury. We also had 2 new members of the league team, Scott Hamilton and Adam Steel, it was their first appearance in the individual matchplay format.

Results were as follows

Scott Hamilton put up a great performance first time out narrowly losing out 3&2, Scott was 1 under gross for the 7 holes he played on the back nine. Great effort Scott

Jack Edwards beat Toby Bryce-Smith 3&2 birdieing the par 3 14th to go 1 up and then wining 15 & 16 to close out the match.

Dan Pedlar once again had his hands full, he must be used to playing girls now.. Unfortunately not Dan's best day losing 6&5

Harry Edwards, disappointed himself at Gogs and lost his first ever singles match for the team losing 5&4.

Next it was the Captains turn, Lewis had to give 5 shots to his opponent but put up a great performance closing his match out on the 16th hole to win 4&2

Finally Adam Steel faced some strong opposition and was unlucky to lose out on 16 4&2 also.

Next matches are as follows

Next Round of the Friendly Cup ( Greensomes matchplay ) away at either Cromwell or Ely City on Sunday 6th July Final league match against Newmarket at home Saturday 19th July

Titleist Vokey SM5 wedges

From deep greenside rough, use your bunker technique. Move the ball forward in your stance, open the face and keep your torso rotating to the finish. The new grooves in Titleist’s Vokey SM5 wedges will help too; tests show they increase backspin by up to 500rpm from long grass.

Take advantage of our expertise

It’s easy to trial a friend’s driver when your form with the woods dips. And whilst you might stumble across better results, long term it’s not the answer. With our expertise we can determine the proper loft and shaft flex that will suit your swing and, ultimately, save you shots.
