Captain's Day - 28th September I am grateful to those members who took part in my re-arranged Captain’s Day last Saturday, especially given that the Ryder Cup was being played in Paris. I hopefully spoke to most of you on the day to thank you personally; I most definitely had a great day. I had 2 complimentary competitions running on the day; a straightforward singles stableford and a course management competition which rewarded hitting fairways and greens and punished 3 putting, lost balls and hitting water hazards and out of bounds. On the plus side, I could not have asked for better weather, a light breeze and glorious sunshine for most of the day which offset the difficult pin positions that I had asked Nick Meehan to put in place. The scoring was nowhere near as good as recent stablefords, perhaps the pin positions were the reason? For a long time the clubhouse leader was Alan Wood on just 36 points, unfortunately, Alan was pipped by Paul Gaughan right at the end with Paul returning a great 38 points. The CSS for the competition was a remarkable 73, the highest for quite some time. With extra points on offer for course management there was a tie at the top when the course management points were added to the stableford points. Steve Lockert, Gubby Panesar and Owen Davies all had 53 points and so countback was enforced. Steve came out on top, Gubby 2nd and Owen 3rd. Nearest the pins on the day were won by Richard Fitzjohn, Scott Ballentine, Peter Sharpe and Doug Poole. For those who were unable to stay for the presentation, your Pro Shop account has been credited with the value of the prize. Hopefully everybody enjoyed the alternative format. Many thanks to Rachael in the cabin and Charlotte and the team in the clubhouse for the excellent food. And to Nick, for some inventive pin positions! Regards, Captain Ian R.
