Greetings from Alisdair Currie

The winner of this years 'Year Supply Of Balls' draw was Dave Norman!! He received 12 and a half Dozen Srixon AD333 Golf Balls!! A huge Congratulations to him on winning this prize! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that took part.

With the New Year now into full swing our thoughts move to the season ahead and the equipment we may want to upgrade, replace or more importantly keep.

We have a special offer running through January where we will re grip one of your clubs for only £2.50. It is our only contact with the club and has to be correct so pop into the shop to take a look at our grip selection.

Winter Bash - Wednesday 7th January

Congratulations must go to this week's winner Scott Ballentine with an impressive 44 points! In second place was Rick Wilcox who narrowly lost out on countback and in third place was Roger Knight with 41 points.

Twos winners: David Lindley, Pat Doyle and Mike Prince.

Monthly Medal - Saturday 10th January

Division 1 winner - Alan Wood with a nett 71
Division 2 winner - Lian McDermott with a nett 74
Division 3 winner - Barry Bates with a nett 69

There were no twos scored in the monthly medal competition so the money will be carried forward to next month's competition.

Playing in the current windy conditions

'when its breezy swing it easy'

Into the wind - This is the hardest wind condition, the ball flies shorter and any curvature is exaggerated. The easiest thing to do is to go up a club and swing it easy, this will control the strike, lower the back spin which will prevent a high trajectory. Be positive as very rarely do you see someone go long of the green into wind.

Side wind - This can be troublesome if you only have a fade or a draw in you game. When the wind travels in the same direction as your fade or draw the shape becomes exaggerated. Trying to play with the wind is very difficult it is easier to shape the ball into the wind for example if the wind is off the left on your shot into 18 and your natural ball flight is a fade. Try not to aim further left and hit a massive fade instead aim where you usually would and try to hit the ball with a draw or even try to hit a straight ball.

Down wind - if holes like 2,3,9,10,11 are down wind and you hit the ball a fairly long way it can be easy to pull your driver out and hit it as far as possible. The problem with this is you will be much closer to the green than usual, so how often do you have a 50 yard pitch shot? I have seen many people hit long drives down wind then miss the green and make bogey, simply because they leave themselves such a short shot which they have never practised and then they completely mess up. Would you not be better off from your usual 100 yard distance where you can make a normal swing? Plus short downwind pitch shots are very tricky as there is no back spin to control the distance.

January Ladies Update

I joined Brampton in 1996 and except for a short sabbatical to Menzies have been here ever since. I never imagined that I would ever be asked to be captain of the ladies section so it came as a big surprise when I was asked. I feel very privileged to be representing the ladies for 2015 and I will do my best to meet the criteria. (Whatever that really is!)

My golf is varied but I enjoy it and hope that with lots of practice this year I could come down to 12 or 13. However more than the golf, it is part of being a member of this great, friendly club. The 19th hole is the place to be for a chat or a drink and we try to have as much fun as we can. I am a working Captain so won't always be seen around the clubhouse during the week but will be available on email and at the end of the phone and weekends.

I loved the challenge for my Ladies Drive In. My Vice Captain, May Burn, had kindly acquired a Captain's cap for me to wear (as I had, many moons ago, been in the Navy). She then put an anchor (not real of course!) at the Tee and in the middle of the fairway was an inflatable submarine (blow-up boat) and the aim was to ensure that I could hit the ball past the enemy!. Well fortunately I managed that, which meant we could all go and eat lunch.

There will be many challenges this year, of that I am sure, but I hope that myself and the committee will be able to work our way through them and with the Lady members support we will have a fantastic year.

Upcoming Events

Rules Evening February 18th with nibbles Al and I are working on some dates for some Captain/Pro challenges and will advertise those when we have something more concrete.

So here's wishing you a successful golfing year,

Nell

Stuart

On Saturday it was my 21st Birthday! I went off to London with my girlfriend and stayed in a Hilton Hotel in Kensington. In the Evening we went to the ICE Bar, which was and exciting but strange experience. Upon entry you are given a big woolly coat and gloves. We had a "few" vodka based cocktails in a -5 degree bar, which is obviously made out of ice! In the bar it also has a series of ice sculptures to look at! It was a great day and I received some lovely gifts from all my friends and family! However, I am now classed as an adult which is certainly not fun!!
