Greetings from Alisdair Currie

Greetings gofers,

With the weather being favourable to us at the moment we are all able to enjoy some great winter golf. We have a come up with a few tips to help you perform at your best this winter.

1) Firstly it is important to be prepared, so it is vital to have the following when you go out onto the course: Bobble hats, winter mittens and hand warmers. Additionally under garments and layers will help you stay warm whilst preventing swing restrictions.

2) Secondly in winter the missed shot can be costly therefore we recommend hitting centre of green rather than going flag hunting. As missed shots can lead to short siding yourself and it is much harder to play a delicate chip or lob shot with the wet ground.

3) Hitting the fairway is always an advantage but especially during the winter as you can pick and place which will ultimately provide you with an excellent lie. Therefore take a club that you feel you are in control with rather than always going with the driver as finding the rough is no good to anyone in these conditions. If you do find it ( like many of us !!!! ) take your punishment and get yourself back into position on the fairway from where we can then pitch it close (Please read the coaching corner on wedge gapping) this will definitely help.

Finally as far as I am concerned playing good golf is not about how much you play but how you set up to play between games. So why not give these three tips ago when you next play and see how you get on.

This week we have a special offer on the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1 X balls.

£35.00 per dozen

this is a limited offer so be quick to take advantage of the number one ball in golf .

Winter Bash 14/01/2015

Congratulations to this week's winner Anthony Garside with a respectable 35 points. In second place was Dave Smith on countback with 34 points over John Ballentine. In fourth place alone with 33 points was David Kelsey. There were no two's winners this week, so the money has been carried over for the next winter bash, so there is plenty to play for! Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who took part!

Captains AM-AM 18/01/15

Congratulations to Alan Wood, Harry Bailey, Mike Dive and Mike Prince for winning the Captains AM-AM on countback with 88 points over Mo Poole, Doug Poole, Dave Humphreys and Keith Curr! Closely behind in 3rd place with 87 points were the group of Steve Lockert, Harry Edwards, Jack Edwards and Adam Steel!

There were also 12 Two's on the day, these came to: Harry Edwards x2, Adam Longford, Scott McCauley, Ray Stonnell, Nick Miller, David Humphreys, Peter North, Richard Scott, David Lindley, Paul Hill and Dave Squires.

Each two won £6, their accounts have been credited in the pro shop! Well done to all the winners and to everyone that took part!

Wedge Gapping

What's the best option 2,3 or 4 wedges?

Things to think about when selecting your wedges. - How far do you hit your PW compared to your highest lofted wedge? (The larger this gap generally the more wedges you may require)

- What style of shot do you like to play (high lob shots or lower pitch and runs)

- What style of course do you play (Flat greens like Bar Hill or raised greens like St.Ives) (Firm ground or soft ground)

- How many longer clubs do you need in your bag?

- How long have you had your current wedges as the grooves do wear out over time?

If your are interested in reassessing your club options we are going to be holding a wedge fitting weekend in February so please come in and have a conversation with us and we can look at getting you booked in for a wedge fitting.

This week we introduce the Seniors Captain John Maith to the Senior Men's Section.

As new Captain of the Senior Men's Section, I will be providing a little bit of information regarding results and events involving our group.

-  We had 7 roll-ups (Mondays and Fridays) in December with an average of 34 players, for each of these.

-  The annual Turkey Trot Singles Stableford attracted 57 entrants, and we had 40 attend the Christmas lunch immediately after this competition. Competition was tough winning with 45 points. In fact, 41 points were required for 10th place.

-  The Winter KO Competition has reached the semi-final stage and should be completed on schedule.

As for me, I am looking forward to the season, very pleased to see my drive fly down the fairway at the Captains' Drive-In, and hope Sunderland remain in the Premier League.

All the best,

John
