County Championship 2015
It was a damp and misty start as the best golfers in the County gathered for the 1st round of 2015 County Championships at Saffron Walden Golf Club. The Walden course looked to be in magnificent condition for the Championship with the super slick greens having some of the fire taken out of them by the damp conditions. The course set up was as good as I have seen it with graded rough to severely test any wayward golf shots. Early 1st round scores indicated that the wet conditions were taking its toll on many of the competitors as only a third of the field managed to break 80. Leader in the clubhouse was big hitting Paul Hodgkin from the Ramsey Golf Club with an excellent round 71 that contained birdies at holes 1, 3, 9 &14. The two in- form favourites for the Championship, James Reeson and Owen Davies, of Brampton Park, both scored 74 along with Ollie Fullerton from Elton Furze. James Reeson came back from his disappointment in the morning round to score an excellent 67. His round contained 5 birdies and no dropped shots and gave him the halfway lead by 3 shots from Hodgkin and 4 shots from Reeve. The Championship Shield was won by the Brampton Park team which was made from James Reeson,Owen Davies and Stuart Entwistle they had an overall score of 447 and they now go on to represent the County in the English Champion club tournament at Brancepeth Castle GC, Durham in September. Sunday morning saw an improvement in the weather although still not exactly summer conditions, as the early starters, who had just made the cut at 163, teed off.
First to tee off was veteran Steve Plumb of the home club who had told his wife he was only playing golf on Saturday as he didn't expect to make the cut, and Ian Robinson of Brampton who had been celebrating for 3 days after being awarded an OBE last Wednesday. They both showed the youngsters the pace that golf should be played at by completing their 2 rounds in only 6 hours and 5 minutes. After the 3rd round Reeson (73) led Hodgkin (72) by just 2 shots with Reeve (73) a further 2 shots behind and Fullerton (73) 6 shots back. The Championship looked as it was going to be decided by these 4 golfers.
James Reeson who won the Championship in 2013, showed his undoubted class by racing to the turn in 33 shots, closely followed by Paul Hodgkin in 34. It now looked to be a two horse race with Ollie Fullerton, out in a valiant 35 and now seemingly out of the race, 8 shots off the pace. The wind suddenly freshened as the leaders started the back nine holes and dropped shots by Reeson at holes 10, 13, and 14 allowed Hodgkin to close to a single shot but 3 pars and a birdie at 16 brought him home in 37 for a round of 70.
Paul finished on 71 giving James overall victory by 3 strokes and a winning total of 284.
Next year's Championship takes place at the Gog Magog Golf Club on the 11/12 June 2016.
Seniors Success
Brampton Seniors have reached the mid- point in their match season. Under the capable leadership of Captain John Maith, the team have won 9 matches , drawn 2 , and lost 1 ( away to St Ives). The team are through to the semi- final of the CAGU Seniors Cup, having narrowly beaten St Ives at home in the quarter- final. We wish them every success.
Professional Staff Blog - George
Two weeks ago I played in my first order of merit event of the season at Bishops Stortford. With rounds of 72 and 73 for a three over par total. I finished in T10 place and 4 shots back from a play off. I was very pleased with this as I was not well leading up to the event and had actually shot 94 four days before in a Pro-Am and didn't hit a ball in-between the events. I was then on holiday in Icmeler, Turkey for a week if you've noticed I avent been here. I was a great week but sadly no golf was played. This week I am playing the second order of merit at Essendon Golf Club. |
